Measure Land and Floor Size
An web application to measure size of properties
Introduction
I have tried to search around for my first house in Melbourne, Australia. The most comprehensive platform to do so is RealEstate.com.au. However, I found that not all the properties have the land size information. More importantly is the floor size which can give me an idea of how big the living area is, which is even less available. To get this kind of information, I have to go to Google Map and measure it manually with the measuring tool. This is a tedious task, especially when I have to do it for many properties. I believe that there are many buyers who are facing the same problem like me. And an automated tool to measure the land and house size will be very helpful for them.
Example: 4 Ascot Court, Narre Warren North, Vic 3804
This beautiful house has the land size information but not the house size. The house size is not available in the floor plan either. So I have to go to Google Map and measure it manually like this:
Follow up idea: Use the floor plan to measure the floor size.
After searching some competitors, I found that the floor plan associated with the property is a good source of information to measure the floor size. Some floor plan even has this information already (end game ). However, most of the floor plans that I have seen look like this:
It shows the size of some important rooms such as bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc. However, it does not show the size of the whole house. Some floor plans even do not have the size information at all, like this one:
However, with these floor plans, we can still make an approximation by using some standard sizes of some specific items/rooms. For example, the size of double garage or bath tub .

Landchecker
Landchecker is a tool to check the land size and planning information of a property. It is a paid service, and the subscription plan is not for individual users (i.e., the Standard plan is $75 per month but with 10 properties report per month, and if you want to unlimited reports, you have to pay $240 per month for the Advanced plan).
The information provided by Landchecker is very comprehensive. It includes the land size, planning zones, planning overlays, planning permits, planning applications, planning history, planning controls, planning scheme, and planning maps.
Property.Com.Au, PropertyValue, and Domain
Property.Com.Au is another platform to search for properties. It seems that they have the floor size information for some properties that cannot be found in RealEstate.com.au, but not for all properties. For example, the floor size information of the above example property can be found in Property.Com.Au which shows that the living area is 242 m2.
Take a tour to other platforms, I found that both PropertyValue.com.au and Domain.com.au have the floor size information for the above example property, which are 242 m2 and 263 m2 respectively.
While the information can be found in these platforms, the difference between them is still a concern. While I have not done any comprehensive research, I believe that many properties do not have the floor size information in these platforms. For examples, this house 4S Walhallow Drive Clyde North, VIC 3978 or this house 6 Bon Court, Narre Warren North, Vic 3804 both do not have floor size information in any of these platforms. This is the reason why I think that an automated tool to measure the floor size will be still helpful.
